Will Silicone Replace BPA-Free Plastics For Kids' Products?

I wrote an article the other day about what silicone is, and it's widely used in those places. And silicone versus plastic.new evidence has come out suggesting that the BPA substitutes in plastics may be just as, or even more, hazardous to our health. The bottom line is that for parents who want to minimize chemical exposure for their children, plastic is not a great choice. But what substitutions are truly safe? Glass and metal work well for baby bottles, but when it comes to plates, cups and mealtime travel gear, it is hard to resist the ease of shatterproof plastic. Enter a new wave of eco-entrepreneurs manufacturing baby gear from food-safe silicone.

Why Is Silicone A Safe Choice?

While not a “100% natural” material like rubber, food-grade silicone is a non-toxic polymer mostly made from silica (sand). It can withstand heating and freezing without leaching or off-gassing, hazardous chemicals – unlike plastics, which contaminate food in these environments. It is also odor- and stain-resistant, hypoallergenic, and because of it’s smooth surface, very easy to clean. For these reasons, and because it is soft life rubber and does not break, it is the perfect material for eco-friendly and non-toxic baby products in particular.

Though I am using strictly anecdotal evidence, I would say we have entered the golden age of silicone kids products – as I come across new, and clever silicone-based designs every day. That said, here are a few of the companies that I am most impressed with this year:

Modern-Twist is a San Francisco-based company founded by Kat Nouri.

The company offers silicone baby bibs (with catch pockets) as well as both adult and kid-friendly placemats. However, my favorite product of theirs is the “munch-mate” feeding set that comes with a matching silicone cup, bowl and plate. The clever design allows the plate to double as a lid for the bowl. You can buy matching placemats to create the perfect gift set. A friend gave me one of the collections recently, and I am in love. Messy mealtime is solved!
